Blind Boys of Alabama: Take the High Road (2011)
Gospel and Country music have always been closely linked and for the latest in a long line of gospel album with crossover appeal, the Blind Boys of Alabama have fully embraced that connection. Featuring such country artists as Jamey Johnson (who also helped produce), Vince Gill, The Oak Ridge Boys, Hank Williams Jr. and Lee Ann Womack, Take the High Road isn't a pure country album but it's a nice mix of steel guitars, gospel beats and of course the fantastic harmonies of the Blind Boys of Alabama. You don't have to be a Christian to appreciate the passion with which the Blind Boys sing and even if the subject matter isn't something you would be appreciative of, there are plenty of fine pure musical moments on the album. Admittedly Gospel music isn't something that I listen to on a regular basis but when I do, it's always this group. There may be better places to start when checking out this fine ensemble but Take the High Road is a nice addition to their giant catalog.
